Philadelphia, PA – May 24, 2025 – The Philadelphia Eagles made a quiet but intriguing move in March when they signed former Packers running back A.J. Dillon to a one-year deal, hoping the bruising back could provide reliable support behind All-Pro Saquon Barkley.
But just two months later, that opportunity may be slipping away.
According to The Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski, Dillon may not even make the final 53-man roster. In his May 23 projection, Kempski listed rookie Will Shipley, special teams ace Avery Williams, and hybrid athlete Ben VanSumeren behind Barkley — with Dillon notably excluded.
From “Quadzilla” to Question Mark
Dillon, known for his massive quads and downhill running style, was once a second-round pick (2020) and posted a strong sophomore campaign in 2021 (803 yards, 5 TDs). But since then, his production has declined. A neck injury ended his 2023 season prematurely and forced him to miss all of 2024.
Now at 27 and medically cleared, Dillon is trying to revitalize his career in a loaded Eagles backfield — but his spot is far from guaranteed.
His 2023 numbers (613 yards, 3.4 YPC) weren’t enough to inspire full confidence, especially given the Eagles’ current roster makeup.
The Rise of Will Shipley
Meanwhile, Will Shipley, a 2024 fourth-round pick, continues to build momentum. As a rookie, he appeared in 16 games, contributing on both offense and special teams. But his defining moment came in the NFC Championship Game, when he led an 80-yard drive — carrying the ball on every play — culminating in a go-ahead touchdown.
“The Eagles feel he can replace Kenny Gainwell — and maybe even upgrade the position,” Kempski noted.
With Shipley offering versatility as a rusher, pass-catcher, and returner, the Eagles seem poised to give him a bigger role in 2025.
Numbers, Not Nostalgia
While Dillon brings experience, his contract is modest — just over $1.3 million, meaning a potential release would not significantly impact the salary cap. In other words, Philadelphia isn’t financially tied to him.
And with roster flexibility at a premium, Dillon will need to prove more than raw power if he wants to stay.
Final Thoughts
Dillon may still have gas in the tank — and if healthy, could be a valuable power back in the right scheme. But in Philadelphia, youth, versatility, and reliability win battles, and Will Shipley has already shown he's ready for RB2 duties.
As training camp looms, A.J. Dillon’s spot on the roster is anything but safe — and the Eagles’ backfield is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the league.
