Pittsburgh, PA – June 26, 2025
He was never the headline in Philadelphia, but his fingerprints were all over their success. Now, with a new team and a bigger opportunity, one former Eagle is quietly becoming a name to watch in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers made a low-profile but intriguing move this offseason by signing Kenneth Gainwell, the 26-year-old running back who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. While stars like Josh Sweat and Milton Williams drew most of the attention during the Eagles’ exodus in free agency, Gainwell’s departure came with less noise — but maybe more upside.
Gainwell didn’t post eye-popping stats in 2024 — 290 rushing yards, 1 touchdown, 16 catches for 116 receiving yards — but his impact went beyond the box score. He also racked up 456 return yards on 18 attempts and consistently provided stability as a space player in the Eagles’ offense. In Pittsburgh, the role won’t be as limited.
“He’s not just a running back in the traditional sense,” Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said. “Really good space player, runs sometimes receiver-like routes. His background at Memphis and some of the things Philly did with him — that’s what we want to build on.”
Pittsburgh’s backfield is already undergoing transformation, and Gainwell could emerge as a hybrid piece — part running back, part slot receiver, part return specialist. With his ability to find seams in zone coverage and accelerate in space, the Steelers may be looking at more than just a depth signing.
In Philadelphia, Gainwell often played in the shadow of bigger names. In Pittsburgh, he could finally get the spotlight. And with Arthur Smith calling the shots, the plan is clear: unlock every ounce of versatility this former Super Bowl contributor has left.
