Ravens Urged to Make Bold Move Before It Is Too Late

Baltimore, MD – June 16, 2025

As the Baltimore Ravens continue their push to build a championship-caliber roster around Lamar Jackson, analysts are sounding the alarm on one crucial weak spot: the edge rush.

While the interior defensive line remains a force with Justin Madubuike and Travis Jones wreaking havoc inside, there’s growing concern that Baltimore lacks a consistent presence on the outside. According to Fox Sports’ Carmen Vitali, the solution may be found in an experienced veteran who’s still sitting on the free agent market — Preston Smith.

Smith, a 10-year NFL veteran, has notched 70.5 career sacks, including 4.5 last season split between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite his age (32), he remains a durable and savvy pass rusher with the type of power and technique that can complement the Ravens’ existing pieces.

“As electric as the Ravens' offense is with Lamar Jackson at the helm, so much of their identity is tied up in defense,” Vitali wrote. “There’s a ton of talent on that side of the ball, but there’s something left to be desired in the pass rush.”

While the team is excited about the potential of Tavius Robinson, Mike Green, Adisa Isaac, and David Ojabo, none of them have yet proven they can handle full-time edge duties in the high-stakes AFC North. Meanwhile, Kyle Van Noy remains a strong presence, but he’s best deployed in rotation rather than relied on as a primary threat.

Adding a player like Smith wouldn’t just add depth — it could tilt the balance in high-leverage moments, especially in late-season games where experience matters. The suggestion is clear: if the Ravens want to avoid repeating the heartbreak of recent playoff exits, they need to act decisively.

“You don’t wait until Week 10 to admit you needed help,” one unnamed scout told Ravens Beatdown. “Baltimore is built to win now. A move like this could make the difference in January.”

With training camp looming and expectations soaring, the clock is ticking. The Ravens have the roster. They have the quarterback. Now they just might need the closer off the edge.
