He Plays Like a Vet: Rookie Jihaad Campbell Is Dominating Eagles Practice

Philadelphia, PA – May 31, 2025

In a training camp loaded with storylines and positional battles, it’s a rookie linebacker turning heads every day at the NovaCare Complex. Jihaad Campbell, the Eagles’ third-round pick out of Alabama, is making a serious impression—and not just because of his athleticism. It’s his poise, precision, and presence that have people talking.

“He plays like he’s been in the league five years,” said one NFC scout in attendance during Wednesday’s OTA session. “You don’t often see rookies diagnose plays this quickly and close with that kind of authority.”

Campbell’s instincts and sideline-to-sideline range are nothing new to fans who watched him dominate in Tuscaloosa. But to see him carry that same swagger and discipline into the NFL—on a Vic Fangio-coached defense, no less—is what’s raising eyebrows across the league.

According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell finished the 2024 college season with an elite 88.5 run-defense grade and was one of just three SEC linebackers to post double-digit tackles for loss (13.5) and multiple forced fumbles (2). His blend of size (6-foot-3, 230 pounds), explosiveness, and tackling form has translated seamlessly to the Eagles' scheme.

“He’s got that blend of physicality and IQ that’s rare to find in young players,” said Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. “The way he communicates, the way he studies tape—it’s veteran-level stuff. And you love to see that from a rookie.”

Dave Spadaro, the team’s longtime insider, echoed the praise in a recent column: “It’s not just the flash plays. It’s the way Jihaad controls the second level, calls out protections, and rarely bites on misdirection. He’s earning trust fast.”

With Nakobe Dean recovering from injury and questions lingering around the linebacker depth, Campbell’s rise could prove pivotal. Though it’s still early, there’s a growing belief that he may not just earn playing time—he could become a day-one starter.

In a recent media session, Campbell humbly brushed off the attention: “I’m just trying to learn from the vets and earn my spot. But yeah… it does feel good to be back in Philly.”

Yes, he’s a Philly native. Yes, he’s got the swagger. And yes, the Eagles may have struck gold again in the middle rounds of the draft.

One thing is clear: Jihaad Campbell isn’t waiting his turn. He’s already playing like he owns it.
