Former Steelers Coach Breaks Silence on Regretful Play Call in Iconic Ravens Game

It was one of the most unforgettable nights in recent Steelers history. A cold December showdown at Heinz Field, playoff hopes on the line, and Antonio Brown stretching across the goal line in the final seconds — forever remembered as the Immaculate Extension.

That moment sealed an AFC North title for Pittsburgh. But for one coach on the sideline, that same night left behind something much more complicated: regret.

Buried behind the celebration and highlight reels was a single play — a short-yardage call gone wrong. According to a revealing interview on This Is Football with ESPN’s Kevin Clark, former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley opened up about what he considers the biggest misstep of his six-year tenure in Pittsburgh.

“Us coaches, we think we have all these great ideas,” Haley said. “So I’m going to run a little fake jet sweep… Ben turns his back, fakes it, turns around — and throws it right to the defense.”

Initially, Haley remembered the play being drawn up for Heath Miller, but investigative work by Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot confirmed it was actually tight end Jesse James. The call happened early in the 2016 Ravens game — a rare misfire in a night remembered for glory. For Haley, it remains a moment that stings even years later.

The former coordinator’s time in Pittsburgh included explosive offenses and Pro Bowl talent at every skill position, but only three playoff wins and an awkward departure left his legacy murky. In owning this play call, however, Haley gives fans a candid glimpse into the pressure and imperfection behind the headset.

“We always want the big play,” he admitted. “But sometimes, simple is better.”
