Eagles Dodge Media Circus by Passing on Viral QB in NFL Draft

Philadelphia, PA – June 24, 2025

The Philadelphia Eagles knew exactly what they were doing on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. With quarterback Jalen Hurts firmly entrenched as the franchise cornerstone, the team faced a crucial decision: who would develop quietly behind him, ready if needed — but without overshadowing the mission?

They had options. Big names. Big noise. And none louder than Shedeur Sanders.

Instead, the Eagles turned to Kyle McCord — the former Syracuse and Ohio State standout — with their sixth-round pick. While it didn’t generate national headlines, it may have been one of the savviest moves of the spring.

“Guaranteed distraction.”
That’s how analyst Christopher Kline described Sanders in his breakdown on FanSided. And in Philly, where the margins are razor-thin in a title defense year, distractions are luxuries no one can afford.

Sure, Sanders brings talent — and followers, cameras, and endless debate. But in a locker room built on discipline, toughness, and unity, the spotlight can burn more than it shines.

“There’s always a storyline when Shedeur’s involved. That’s not what this team needs right now,” one NFC scout told ESPN. “You want your backup to develop — not trend.”

McCord, by contrast, has flown under the radar — and that’s exactly the point. Coaches rave about his command during offseason work, his chemistry with QB coach Scot Loeffler, and his willingness to absorb rather than attract.

“He’s about football, not fame,” said one Eagles assistant, “and that’s the difference.”

The Eagles know they’re one hit away from needing QB2 or even QB3. But what they don’t want is a circus. With Jalen Hurts under center, and a Super Bowl target on their backs, Philly chose clarity over chaos.

“Some fans might’ve liked the idea of Sanders learning from Hurts,” Kline noted. “But most are relieved the Eagles passed on the noise.”

In a market as intense as Philadelphia — and a season as high-stakes as 2025 — it’s the quiet decisions that often echo the loudest.
