Eagles Could Move on from Star Linebacker in Strategic Depth Shift

Philadelphia, PA – May 24, 2025 – With their linebacker room quickly becoming one of the deepest in the league, the Philadelphia Eagles may be ready to part ways with one of their most promising young defenders. According to league analysts, second-year linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. could be on the trade block this offseason.

The selection of Alabama standout Jihaad Campbell in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft sent a loud message: the Eagles are planning for the future at inside linebacker. Pair that with the expected return of Nakobe Dean, and the already-established presence of Zack Baun — an All-Pro and Pro Bowler who just signed a $51 million extension — and the picture becomes clear.

“Trading Trotter might be the smartest move for both player and team,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine.

Despite being just a fifth-round pick in 2024, Trotter Jr. impressed as a rookie contributor on a Super Bowl-winning team. His football IQ, ability to line up the defense, and instincts made him stand out — but with limited snaps expected in 2025, a trade could maximize his value and land him in a starting role elsewhere.

Of course, his name carries weight in Philadelphia. Trotter is the son of franchise icon Jeremiah Trotter Sr., a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the most beloved linebackers in Eagles history. That legacy makes any potential departure emotionally loaded for fans.

Still, GM Howie Roseman has a track record of flipping mid-to-late round talent into draft capital — and with Trotter’s rookie tape, he could easily fetch a Day 3 pick or be packaged in a larger deal.

“He’s really smart… always under control,” an AFC executive told NFL.com. “If he were just a little bigger, he might’ve gone in the first round.”

As it stands, Baun is the now, Campbell is the future, and Trotter might be the trade chip. The Eagles’ linebacker corps is in great hands — even if those hands may change soon.
