Philadelphia, PA – June 25, 2025
Philadelphia’s backfield underwent a quiet but significant shift this offseason. One of the team's most trusted role players — a triple-threat contributor known for doing the dirty work behind the league's rushing leader — packed his bags and headed to a new home. His departure might have stirred some concern initially, but the Eagles aren’t looking back.
In fact, as OTAs and minicamp wrapped up, it became increasingly clear that the team had already prepared for this transition. A young offensive weapon has begun to rise rapidly through the depth chart, showing flashes of vision, hands, and versatility that had coaches nodding in approval and fans taking notice.
The player in question? Kenneth Gainwell. After four productive seasons in Philly, the former Memphis standout signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal. Known for his ability to block, catch, and run in high-pressure situations, Gainwell’s absence might’ve left a void—if not for the emergence of second-year running back Will Shipley.
“He made some nice catches in the middle of the field during OTAs,” reported Ed Kracz of Eagles on SI. “We’ll see more when the pads come on.” Shipley already gave fans a taste of his upside in last year’s playoffs, breaking off a 57-yard run in the NFC Championship — a reminder of just how dynamic he can be.
Across his college career at Clemson, Shipley racked up over 2,700 rushing yards, 600 receiving yards, and nearly 1,000 return yards. His all-purpose style is strikingly similar to what Gainwell offered during his Eagles tenure, and his spring performance suggests he’s ready to inherit that role fully.
Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, Gainwell has turned heads. “They are thrilled to have this guy,” Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly said. “They can see something in him that they think can help the offense.” Arthur Smith, the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, praised Gainwell’s flexibility: “Really good space player, he runs sometimes receiver-like routes.”
Still, the Eagles aren’t second-guessing their decision. With Shipley developing quickly and Saquon Barkley still anchoring the ground game, Philadelphia’s running back room looks poised for another season of dominance.
“Even though Eagles fans wish nothing but the best for Gainwell, they should be excited for what Shipley has to offer in 2025 and beyond.”
