Philadelphia, PA – June 17, 2025
The Philadelphia Eagles are known for tough decisions when it comes to roster cuts, and 2025’s mandatory minicamp is already hinting at more heartbreak on the horizon. Two once-prominent names — linebacker Nakobe Dean and wide receiver Britain Covey — are reportedly on the bubble, and time may be running out for both.
Dean, a 2022 third-round pick, was once hailed as the quarterback of the defense. But with the arrival of All-Pro Zack Baun and first-rounder Jihaad Campbell, Dean’s reps have quietly disappeared. Injuries and inconsistency have plagued his young career, and with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio implementing a new, more aggressive scheme, patience is wearing thin. “Dean just isn’t playing fast enough. When you’re buried on the depth chart in June, that’s a red flag,” one team insider told Bleeding Green Nation.
Covey, meanwhile, was a fan-favorite return specialist during Philly’s 2022 Super Bowl run. But since then, explosive plays have been few and far between. With rookies Ainias Smith and Isaiah Bond flashing return potential in early workouts, the writing may be on the wall. Special teams coordinator Michael Clay has hinted at a more dynamic approach for 2025, and “we’re looking for guys who can flip the field — and do more than just catch punts,” he said last week.
With over a dozen picks in the 2026 NFL Draft and an ultra-competitive 90-man roster, Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni have no room for sentimentality. Both Dean and Covey still have time to change the narrative, but the margin for error is razor-thin.
Minicamp doesn’t determine the final 53-man roster — but it often sets the tone. If these two names fade further during training camp, their Eagles journey could end far sooner than expected.
